Why ComplementaryDuo?

What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other word would smell as sweet.

W. Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2)

Choosing the right name is a creative process which one can easily get lost in. That is even more true if you don't have a clear idea about what you would like it to communicate to people. We wanted it to be something utterly simple but at the same time to reflect who we are and how we function as a team. The most important thing was - we just wanted it to really be us.

The truth is out there…

We did not want to spend too much time on it. There is a theory which says that if you think too much about what you would like to say, most of the time you end up telling a lie. Of course, we didn't want that. We came to the conclusion we should really describe the way we're living our everyday lives, and that is - we fill each other in, we complement each other in every way, we are worth more as a whole then each of us as an individual which makes us balanced and complete. It gives us more energy. That is who we are. That's what we are like. Simply ComplementaryDuo. And since we're a couple, that goes for both, our personal and professional life.

And then, there is the obvious

Most of you already know about the color theory. If you don't, I suggest you find out by visiting one of many sites that deal with that particular subject in detail. By definition complementary colors are any two colors which are directly opposite each other on a color wheel, such as red and green. These opposing colors create maximum contrast and maximum stability. Similarly, we are not the same. Sometimes we have completely different approach to completing the same task, and most of the time we find the best solution is a combination of both.

The fact that complementaryduo.com domain was still available was really a miracle itself. Anyone trying to buy a decently named domain lately will surely know what am I talking about. We took that as a sign of good luck, immediately buying it and successfully avoiding flickrizing the name to something like cmplmntryduo. ComplementaryDuo it was.

This has to be the most beautiful and functional web site of web developers I have ever seen.

One thing though, did you have to pick a name guaranteed to break almost any layout you could possibly come up with? :-()

Seriously though, I think what makes the site even more interesting is that it is created by two halves of the same whole.

My girlfriend and I work best together, when we are in different rooms. ;-)

Thanks from the bottom of our hearts Craig. As for the name, we have come up with the very cunning plan… We intent to shorten it to ‘C2′ or ‘cduo’ if need be, so no layout will present a problem to us :)

Oh, and do try to work it out with your girlfriend, it’s well worth it. ;)

Hi! I love the layout of your site and especially the whole “complementary” bit with it being run by a romantically involved couple. That’s pretty awesome!

The main reason why I’m commenting though is that the last bit made me laugh about the choice of domain name. I remember what it was like when I registered mine; thechoad.com.

Basically I had a blog over on blogger and wanted my own domain, but my blog was called “The Chronicles of a Dumbass”. In the end I decided to just take the first letter of each word, but I was then left with “coad”, which didn’t look/sound good and could also be pronounced as either “co-add” or “code” and I didn’t really like either, nevermind having readers calling it different things.

So a friend told me to take the “ch” from “chronicles” and TheChoad.com was born (choad.com was already taken, hence the ‘The’ in the domain - no matter though as it was already in the title anyway).

Only a few days after registering the domain and sorting everything else out, I decided to check if it was co-incidentally a real word by looking it up on dictionary.com. It turns out that it is.

    It means penis.

So when you spoke about trying to buy a decent named domain… yeah, that’s the point at which I laughed. It’s definitely not an easy thing to do. It’s generally sods law that if you think of a decent domain name, someone’s already got it. Or if you find one that’s free, it generally sucks as a domain name. But complementaryduo.com definitely works well.

One thing I’ve learned though is that it’s important to check that whichever name you use doesn’t mean something dodgy, especially in your own language.

Otherwise you might just end up calling yourself a penis. :(

What a phenominal looking site. Nice job. I like the automatic scrolling capabilities of the “Extras” section.
